Avon Valley Railway in Bitton is appealing for donations following the horrifying discovery that “a previously well-presented and respected employee” has helped himself to some £50,000 from the charity’s accounts.

Matthew Smith has been revealed to actually be an alias of Nathan Hudson, who is wanted by Humberside Police in connection with a range of fraud cases.

Further information, from the BBC:

Heritage railway says 'fraud' behind missing £50k

A charity heritage railway has launched a fundraiser after it says £50,000 went missing following what is believes was fraudulent behaviour.

The Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust, in Bitton, near Bristol, said it had first seen financial irregularities at the start of 2024 and, months later, bailiffs demanded £6,000.  After an internal investigation, it found £50,000 had been lost from the books of the railway, which has about 80,000 visitors each year and it is run by volunteers.

Roger Eynun, chairman of the trust, said trustees had to be "very, very careful about what we can spend at the moment".  He said some staff had been personally and financially hit by the discovery.  The missing money meant the trust's ability to work on restoring the heritage railway had also been impacted over the winter, he said.

Mr Eynun told the BBC the discovery had "set them back considerably", but it would "not kill them".  "We need to recoup the money in order that we can keep going."

The chairman added: "We can keep our volunteers together, and get on and progress, because our ultimate vision is to restore the line into Bath where it once was.  So this is a means whereby we can ask the public to donate money into the appeal fund to recoup the £50,000. So every penny is gratefully received."

The BBC understands police have received a report regarding the missing money.

The fact that the title doesn't reveal the 'famous' person, means they aren't really that headline worthy and go for the click bait option instead. If it was a genuinely famous person, you would definitely want their name on your headline rather than saying 'a famous passenger'!

For the record, and to save everyone a click (I googled it rather than using that link) - it's Francis Bourgeois.

Who?

Why not just tell us who it was so we can make an informed judgement as to whether to click on an ad-filled local newspaper link?

Edit: There also appears to already be a thread on the Avon Valley Railway?

A railway charity says a large number of track materials including cast iron chairs have been stolen from its property over the Christmas period.

Staff at Avon Valley Railway discovered the large theft from the yard in Bitton, near Bristol, on Thursday.

Trustee Joseph Dean said the value the items to the thieves was "nothing" compared to the cost to the charity.

It seems to have been targeted in this case. They went for old parts and left other metal as well as power tools.

...or frustratingly, just melting down the metal for scrap and chucking the rest.

Thieves have stolen thousands of pounds worth of ‘irreplaceable’ parts from a heritage railway in Bristol, just days before it's due to reopen following months of lockdown.

Raiders forced their way into the goods shed at the Avon Valley Railway at Bitton overnight on Wednesday (May 5), stealing specialist parts used in the restoration of the charity’s locomotive steam and diesel trains.

The cost of the theft is expected to run into ‘thousands of pounds’ but the railway operators say the bigger loss is the heritage value. of the items.

Many of the parts, such as gauge glass fittings and heat traps, were original, making them incredibly hard to replace.

Mark Simmons, the railway’s commercial and business manager, said: “This was a very targeted theft by people who knew what they were after.

I'm wondering where the thieves' target market is? Other heritage railways? Private collections?

 2015 Gala Lineup is:
GWR 5700 Class No. 5786 "L. 92"
Metropolitan Railway E Class No. 1
GWR 4575 Class No. 5521 "L. 150"
Austerity WPR No. 15 "Earl David"
That's three London Transport themed locomotives, but the London feeling doesn't stop there. The addition of some heritage London road vehicles too means we're bringing the capital right to Bristol, albeit in vintage fashion.
The gala will feature one of our famous intensive timetables on both days, including passenger and freight trains and all kinds of unusual workings.
The main event is Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October but keep your eyes peeled for further "big smoke" steam action a bit nearer the time.

From the Bristol Post:

Avon Valley Railway sees record passengers step on board for its Santa Special

Record numbers of passengers enjoyed a festive ride on the Avon Valley Railway this Christmas.

Another cracking season has seen Avon Valley Railway's Santa Specials run at more than 90 per cent capacity.

The festive train rides, which ran from November 30 until Christmas Eve, carried thousands of passengers along the heritage railway line from Bitton.

The special services, during which each passenger meets Santa and his helpers as they pass through the carriages handing out gifts to young visitors, have seen their popularity grow for five consecutive years.

Commercial manager Richard Shacklock said: "We would like to thank everyone who joined us to celebrate the festive season on board one of our Santa Specials, making it our best Christmas yet. The Santa Specials are a magical experience for passengers of all ages, whether it's receiving a gift from Santa himself or enjoying some festive nostalgia on board our steam train.

"Families return year after year to travel with Santa, and we see plenty of new faces too as the popularity of the Santa Specials just keeps on growing. Even though the way the calendar fell this year meant we were running two less days than in 2013, average numbers per train were up. It^s been incredible.

"This is testament to our volunteers' hard work in creating a truly memorable day out for visitors, many of whom send us thank you letters. Record-breaking passenger numbers are, of course, more than just figures - the Santa Specials bring in vital funds for Avon Valley Railway, which couldn't survive without its volunteers and visitors."

The heart of Avon Valley Railway is Bitton Station, an original Midland Railway station, which like the locomotives, carriages and track, has been restored by a team of dedicated volunteers.

Without the volunteers, the locomotives wouldn^t operate or be restored, tickets wouldn^t be sold and the site wouldn^t be maintained ^ but thanks to them and those that visit, the railway is being restored for the delight of current and future generations.

Did I ever relate that, as a schoolboy, we had a school trip to London from Bitton.  Because Kingswood Grammar School's catchment was the area to the east of the Bristol border, the special train began at Bitton and called at Oldland, Warmley and Mangotsfield and then somehow gained the GW.  I think we must have reversed at Bristol TM but I don't remember doing that to be honest.  Nice to have a non stop run from there to Pad though.  I got on at Bitton, as the bus to Bath from Hanham went past the station.  It was about 1958 and must have been an early start.

First's Service 332 from Bristol Bus Station is your best bet, calls at Kenilworth Drive junction in Willsbridge, 400 yds from Bitton station. Service 42 terminating at Cherry Gardens is also pretty close to Bitton station.

EDIT: Ah, blakey just beat me to it.

Thanks both.  I had actually looked with GE and SV to see where the stops were nowadays.  The funny thing is, I posted my complaint, as I thought them much too far away!

As I lived in Hanham for my first 20 years, my comments about Bitton were made with local knowledge.  Still, others reading here will have found your bus info useful reading, so you did not waste effort..

Diesels?  Pah!

You want some proper engines - Tornado, for instance.

Diesels have proper engines ... if you want something that's engineless, try an electric, which merely has a transmission system.

The secret is to look for buses to Willsbridge or Cherry Gardens Road, both of which are pretty close by: the 42 provides a regular service to CHerry Gardens, with the 332 serving Wilisbridge, or if you're really keen you can take a 45 and walk from Longwell Green!

In their wisdom the MR decided to call the station Bitton even though actual Bitton is some way down the road. I assume that Willsbridge didn't really exist, at least in its current form, in the 1860s.

Oh, and on the subject of "proper engines", all I have to say is this...

A first for the AVR and a bit of an experiment: if it succeeds then it's likely to become a regular event, if not then, erm, it probably won't. Fares are very reasonable for an event like this, and all support much appreciated.

Ex-BR locos due to feature are 31130 (class 31), D2994 (class 07) and visiting guest loco D9521 (class 14), together with our ex-MOD Ruston shunter 429 and a class 107 DMU.

I just looked up buses to the AVR.  The bus stops are a helluva way from Bitton station.

Mind you, Bitton station is a helluva way from Bitton.

Has anyone on the AVR made any representation on that point (the bus stops)?

From the Bristol Evening Post:

Chugging along the Avon Valley Railway is always a lovely journey, but the trip was even more magical when a very important guest with a long white beard, rosy cheeks and sack of presents boarded the train.

Santa had made an early trip down from his home in Lapland to give presents to some very special Evening Post readers who have gone through a difficult year and deserved a treat.

The first Santa Steam Special of 2011 takes to the tracks at Avon Valley Railway in Bitton

There were wide eyes and even wider smiles when Father Christmas welcomed them on the platform at Bitton, and as the train made its way to Oldland Common there were cries of, ^where^s Santa, where^s Santa?^

One family who met Father Christmas was Myra Mitchell, 53, a cleaner from Patchway, her daughter, Hannah Mitchell, 28, from Downend and her children Teri Jay Thompson, six, and Brook, four. When Teri Jay was three she was sent for an MRI scan after abnormalities were found during an eye test. Doctors discovered she had a condition which caused tumours on her eyes, and now the little girl needs tests every six months and an MRI scan every year to check whether they are getting bigger or if she needs chemotherapy.

But yesterday she was thrilled when Father Christmas walked down the train carriage to give presents to her and her younger sister.

Myra said: ^We don^t know what the future holds for TJ, even the specialist doesn^t, so it is a case of doing as many nice things as we can now in case it gets any worse.^

When Father Christmas stopped by Riley Mills, four, and his brother Lenny, two, he gave them a special key to rub so that he would be sure to stop at their house for Christmas.

The family, with mum Melanie, 27, and dad Ryan, 28, from St George, were invited on the train because Riley suffers from moebius syndrome, which causes problems with his eyes. The little lad, who has just started school, has had three operations this year alone, and has to travel up to Manchester every three months for physiotherapy. Dad Ryan said: ^It is a big year for him so we thought it would be a nice treat for him. Lenny has hearing problems as well, so it is nice for us to come out as a family.^

Father Christmas gave Riley a wooden building block set and Lenny a cow teddy. Riley said: ^It was fun to meet Father Christmas. I touched his magic key so that he can come to our house on Christmas Eve.^

As Santa handed out the presents there were whoops of delight as youngsters unwrapped juggling balls, toy cars, teddies and games.

When the train reached the Avon Riverside stop everyone got out to see the engine driver.

Council worker Linzi Mitchell, 43, her postman husband Mark, 41, and their children Holli, nine, and Abbi, five, had come from their home in Little Stoke to see Santa. Holli was born with holes in her heart and had surgery when she was a baby and again a month ago to have a valve replaced, so it was lovely for the family to have a nice day out together. The two girls somehow managed to wait before ripping open their presents, and Holli said: ^It was exciting to meet Father Christmas and really nice to see him.^

Abbi said: ^Father Christmas has a long beard and it was nice to get a present from him, and I am glad my sister is better now.^

Back on the platform at Bitton, Archie Grafton, six, was just as excited at seeing the train as Santa. Archie, of St George, had travelled with his sister Kaitlin, three, and dad Dean, 31, and mum Tina, 26, for the day out, and loves trains so much he wants to be a train driver when he is older. Mum Tina said: ^He^s train mad, obsessed with them, so this is a lovely day out for us.^

Before he got on his sleigh to go back to Lapland, Father Christmas said: ^It^s the best job in the world, getting to see all these bright eyes and smiling faces, and it^s always a happy train. They^ve all been good boys and girls and I^ll be visiting them all on Christmas Eve ^ but they^ll have to be sound asleep so I can put their presents under the tree.^

David Cole, development manager at Avon Valley Railway, said: ^We^ve been running the Santa experience now for just over 30 years. Every year it is wonderful to see the young children having a great time, having their photos taken with Santa and receiving their presents as well. We^ve been delighted that we have been able to work with the Evening Post to help some of those children who might otherwise not have the chance to meet Father Christmas, and also give them the opportunity to travel on a steam train.^

Thanks for the warning. I'll be the one trying to defend myself with the new-fangled plastic Halo Plus 2...you can bounce the white beam off the moon but it's rubbish as a weapon! Will have to make alternative arrangements.

BTW, in a brief moment when the AVR website wasn't on the p*ss this morning I managed to confirm that the advance purchase price is indeed GBP 9.00. BNM, if you still haven't had any joy finding out about the FGW joint ticketing arrangements I'd suggest an email to info@avonvalleyrailway.org or a call to 0117 932 5538 - someone there should be able to help, or at least get hold of someone else who can!!

If anyone wants to say "hi" (or tell me exactly what you think of me, your choice!) ...

Hmm.  With the cancellation of the Exe Tractor Railtour, it now seems that I'll be attending this event instead.

I'll be the one carrying a traditional cast metal Bardic lamp ...

Sorry about this...I didn't expect the through ticketing arrangements to be covered by the Official Secrets Act!

Will check tomorrow. Can BNM send me a text to remind me though

Blood from a stone springs to mind on this one I'm afraid! AFAIK it's calculated as the appropriate rail fare to Keynsham plus the (slightly discounted) advance purchase gala fare. From memory I think that's ^9 but the bleedin' website's down at the moment so I can't confirm it, sorry...

The AVR blurb says that the through ticket can be purchased from any staffed FGW station, so Ollie may be able to find out a little more. I would assume that appropriate railcard discounts apply to the National Rail portion but not the AVR portion but I wasn't involved in setting up these arrangements! It would be nice if at least a few of the tickets got sold as a 'proof of principle' for through ticketing, and I suspect it'll be a pretty rare STAR issue for someone's collection... It gets you the bus shuttle to/from Bitton as well, which is operating from the main car parking site at Somerdale.

Sunday is the day I plan to pop along as well. I see from the AVR Gala webpage that there are through ticketing arrangements from FGW stations to Keynsham and then a dedicated bus link to the AVR. Anyone (i.e Ollie  ) able to check what the fares are from Temple Meads (or SVB Line) and whether railcard discounts are applicable? I've drawn a blank trying to get the information online or by 'phone.

If anyone wants to say "hi" (or tell me exactly what you think of me, your choice!) then I'll be overseeing operations at Oldland Common all day Saturday and the guard on one of the passenger sets on Sunday.

There is a chance I may be able to pop down on Sunday

Slight change in the line-up for this event, in that 47406 is no longer available but GWR pannier 1369 has been arranged at short notice from the South Devon Railway (to whom big thanks).

An update on the planned festivities, posted by one of my colleagues on another forum, with a few more details about what's planned:

After last year^s successful gala with the N2, we^ve decided to push the boat out. This will be for the first time in several years, that we have ran a two day event and to make it extra special, we have decided to hire ex-resident Black 5 45379 from the Mid Hants Railway. This will be the first time this loco has left its home base since returning to traffic last year.

Running alongside the Black 5 will be RSH 7151 and TKH 4015 (providing the repairs to it^s main steam pipe are completed in time). If 4015 is unavailable then Llangollen^s Hunslet saddle tank 1837 ^ Jessie^, will substitute.

Along with this, subject to being able to pay all the Transport Costs etc prior to the event, then we have also got the option to hire Jinty 47406 from Loughborough to join the line up, just for the weekend.

The timetable for both days, currently still being finalised, looks to be an interesting one, with stopping and express passenger services and freight services. For the first time, we will also be running a two coach local train, around the other services.

Tickets are now available for the event, either from the station office or online. Another first is two day tickets, also available. Anybody interested can also purchase tickets from First Great Western (day tickets only) allowing travel from your home station to Keynsham, a vintage shuttle bus to Bitton and your rover ticket for the gala.

Along with its visit for the gala, the Black 5 will be used for a Pie^Pint train on the evening of the 11th, starting at 7pm and several Footplate Experience courses. These take the form of the ^Pines Express^, allowing you to drive, fire and act as guard on an express passenger train.

On the 23rd of October we will also be running a Landslip appeal event, in support of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway, the Black 5^s last scheduled operating day with us, with proceeds from this going towards the appeal. There will also be driver for a Tenner operating with on of the resident diesel loco^s during the day.

Any additional information for the gala can be found on our website at www.avonvalleyrailway.org/gala or by calling the station office on 0117 932 5538.

Much appreciated...although that's a bleedin' long walk from the centre of town!

Will update here once I have seen the roster and know what duties I'm doing over the weekend...

I think I can make the effort to pop along. Might even walk from Central Bristol.

With apologies for the blatant plug...

The Avon Valley Railway at Bitton is holding its annual 'End of Season' gala over the weekend of 15/16 Oct, featuring Black Five 45379 (a former Bitton resident) from the Mid Hants Railway as the star attraction. Full details at available at http://www.avonvalleyrailway.org/gala - from what I hear there's a chance that another guest loco may be added to the roster although I don't think this has been formally confirmed yet.

Through ticketing will be available in conjunction with FGW - the 'advance' ticket price for the AVR gala will be added onto the cost of your National Rail fare to Keynsham, and this will include a bus shuttle between Keynsham and Bitton.

I'm planning on being there both days (although in what capacity I'm not sure yet) so feel free to say hello...!

Only discovered this today courtesy of Dyspozytor at the "Behind the Water Tower" blog, but turns out that this story was also picked up by national rail industry publications in both Britain and Poland.

Time to fit some 'blues and twos' to RSH 7151 then?

I'd be lying if I said that I hadn't suggested it... Who knows, maybe it'll happen on a diesel operated service one day, then the secondman can "nee-naw" the two-tone all the way back

Or maybe deck out PWM3769 in hi-vis green and yellow 'battenberg' decals.

From the BBC:

Paramedics used a steam engine to transport a cyclist who suffered a back injury on a remote cycle path.

They borrowed a 1950s train to carry the man to safety after he collided with another rider between Bristol and Bath.

The cycle track runs alongside the Avon Valley Railway and is almost two miles from the A431 Bath Road.

Railway staff worked with Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) to get the man on board.

GWAS received a 999 call about the incident at about 1700 BST on Tuesday.

Paramedic Andy Osmond said: "The rider had gone over his handlebars and was complaining of spinal pain. We immobilised him on a stretcher, but could not get our ambulance to him. We thought about requesting the air ambulance but there was nowhere for it to land. However, there were two members of the Avon Valley Railway on scene and they called the engine driver to back up the steam train from Bitton so we could put the patient on board and take him to the ambulance."

The cyclist, thought to be aged in his 40s, was taken to Royal United Hospital in Bath for x-rays, but his condition was not thought to be serious.

Mr Osmond said: "Obviously we would like to thank the Avon Valley Railway staff for their assistance - their help meant the patient could be transferred safely from a difficult location. Also, I've never been on a steam train, so it was quite an interesting experience."

From the Bristol Evening Post:

Two Bristol families who had a miserable day out at the heavily criticised Lapland New Forest have been offered a free festive train ride.

Both families hope to get their money back after the attraction was closed last week following a deluge of complaints.  But to cheer them up Avon Valley Railway has offered them all free tickets to meet Santa Claus on one of his trains, which they will take up on December 20.

The Santa Special trains give the opportunity for children of all ages to meet Father Christmas in the run up to December 25.

Last year more than 11,000 people rode the six-mile round trip through the Avon Valley.

The delight of many a garden lover, the Oldland Show celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. But now, for the first time in its history, it is joining forces with the Avon Valley Railway and the Military Vehicle Trust to create a super-show - an event that will attract more than just the fanatics with their flowerbeds.
