Don't think I would like to negotiate any pointwork on those red wheeled rail bikes

The black one at the back might do ok though.

An old thread ... I came across it with missing images - now fixed -

I do often feel that my fascination with Ireland and it's railed transport is rather off topic on the Coffee Shop and it's something I tend to share only in digestible chunks ...

It's a fascination shared by all who have been there, especially those with an Irish surname.

A frantically busy few days on the forum just at the moment, and elsewhere too (some unexpected things!) but probably worth a significant ask around to members about how much we should cover some of the tangential subjects.    Personally I would love to make another trip to Ireland ....

Another chunk:

reminds me "I would love to make another trip to Ireland" but doubt it will be in 2021

Never mind, there are only 29 days of 2021 left after all.

Well, my Random Access Memory* did come up with a very tentative "Ireland - and seen in a previous quiz?" for that - but Google couldn't find any supporting evidence. If only I could tell when those vague recollections are actually right.

That quiz was in 2018, and someone did recognise it then. At the time, Graham said "I will start a separate thread on Dromod  rather than clutter up here." So I guess this thread has evolved to become that promised one?

* It's random whether it comes up with anything at all.

Indeed - I think it *has* evolved in that way.    Guess I gave no timescale on that thread from three years ago.   A fascinating place and visit - stumble upon almost by accident - a graveyard of industrial / transport heritage which needs tender loving care, which the people there wish and try to give, but don't have a financial model or team enough to do.   I really wish to go back sometime.

Hm. That looks like the decomposing remains of a DH6, one of which is in a museum at Coventry Airport. No idea if there is any railway stuff there, or a model of what looks like the Beatles' Yellow Submarine.

Nope ... not Coventry, sorry ... let's try another ...

Just the one left ... and we have established that the clue to this one is that there's a wide range of other stuff at the same place, some very different to rail related.

14.

A further clue or two:

Just saw this in among all the reports of IET problems on the recent posts thread and thought for a moment Graham was proposing it as an IET replacment.

20. I think it’s James Cook.  (I also reckon the name previously included “University Hospital”.)

The adjacent footbridge was already in place so it wasn’t new with the station, and therefore looks quite old.

Paul

Yes, it is.  One of the few stations named after a person?   James Cook, Victoria, Paddington (after a bear) ...

Graham, Lee...

New Station could it be Larkhall?

It isn't, I', afraid - but right clue for that final picture.   Enhanced clue - New station on existing line.

A guess for 14. Is this the "Fascinating place of historic hardware - far beyond just rail", being the Amberley Working Museum that is (or was when I was last there many years ago) full of historic hardware of all descriptions?

Right clue ... but,  sorry, wrong place

3 Waterford - could be a long wait for the next train to Rosslare!

Train on the right has just arrived from Limerick Junction ... and really should carry on to Rosslare Europort, but hasn't done so for 10 years. Long story, separate thread.

Aha - change of gauge clue - is 3 Aberystwyth (change for Vale of Rheidol) - my memory from 35 years ago is that the VOR platform was on the left facing the buffers?

I thought that Vicky had slipped up by not calling "VHF Omnidirectional Radio" until I read it again.

No, actually it isn't.   A took a look at that answer and thought "huh?", but then turning up picture no. 3, I can see exactly why you made that suggestion.

I wonder whether Cambridge North is the more convenient alternative to Waterbeach? (18)

You are correct!

I've not checked your clues, but I believe number 11 is Dingwall.

It is

Seven remain ... 7 hints but not saying which hint goes with which picture!

A town that still has a major terminal and a minor one too
Campaign to re-open another service from here
Fascinating place of historic hardware - far beyond just rail
Junction; tough choice which way to carry on for the leisure rider
New Station
Showing multiple gauges?
Station I used prior to another more convenient opening

Is number 6 Bletchley?  The narrow stairs with no cover or sides being the Bedford shuttle platform?

Paul

Yes, it is!
Oh thanks, I wasn’t really sure, I haven’t been there for ages.  Obviously had to be somewhere on the then LM network given the train livery and station signage.

Nope!

None at all!

Come tomorrow I may look to give some specific clues ... for the moment, let me tell you that five of the remaining nine to be identified are in the UK, but all in places I have not been in over a year.  Perhaps everyone's memory fades ...

Just over half way ... 11 correct and 9 to go.

2 - Hamburg Hauptbahnhof - johnneyw
4 - Abermaw, or Y Bermo, or Barmouth - brooklea
5 - Peterborough - eightonedee
7 - Barry - TonyN
8 - Crowcombe Heathfield - bignosemac
9 - Okehampton - AMLAG
12  Altnabraec - PhilWakely
13 - Chathill - paul7755
16 - New York, World Trade Center - TonyK
17 - Melksham - ellendune
19 - Andalsnes - stuving

13.  Chathill?

Definitely the right “lean to” shape - on the Newcastle to Berwick section’s minor stations they usually seemed to spend all the money on one platform, and had a minimalist shack on the other side.   No relevance to which direction was most popular either, from what I remember.

17 - Melksham - ellendune
8 - Crowcombe Heathfield - bignosemac
19 - Andalsnes - stuving
4 is Abermaw, or Y Bermo, or Barmouth - brooklea
16 - New York, World Trade Center - TonyK

Somewhat tongue in cheek suggestions of Minehead and Bristol Parkway are fun but wrong.

Stop press - yes - 5 is Peterborough - eightonedee

My memory may be somewhat erratic (to say the least), but for no. 19 it tells me "I've seen that before" and also "wasn't it in Norway?" And it was right on both counts - in a previous quiz it was one of the ones no-one got, so the answer had to be provided: "Norway - Aldesnes".

So it's Andalsnes, almost as spelled by a Norwegian (who'd like to put a loop on top of the first A).

I believe it is just possible that 17 is Melksham

9 = Okehampton; reopening to regular passenger trains later this year on the alternative main line between Exeter and Plymouth.

8. Crowcombe Heathfield, West Somerset Railway.

All three correct.  Sorry - no. 14 is nowhere near Minehead, though.
