From the BBC

Courts imposing community sentences would have the power to hand out driving and travel bans under legislation expected to be introduced next month.

I heard this earlier - are they really suggesting that people who have committed crimes serious enough to deserve a formal punishment should be denied getting around with his own transport and pushed onto buses and trains.

In much the same way as those banned for drink driving are forced to use public transport?

Good punishment, eh?

Certainly helping with education to use more sustainable transport!

Copyright and more - please read through just to remind yourself if you're a Coffee Shop poster.

This is complex. From Copyrightlaws.com, who provide information and courses to help you (and me) learn best practise to legally share from other places (Copyright).

THE BOTTOM LINE ON SHARING AND REPUBLISHING ONLINE CONTENT

Yes, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to copyright, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the copyright basics. It’s also good to know when and where to turn for guidance when issues come up.

Sharing and republishing online content can be straightforward at times and complex at others. Developing best practices for legally using third-party online content will help you stay copyright compliant and keep your risk of copyright infringement to a minimum

There's a degree of irony here in that so many sites and so much content is out there and can be easily copied - indeed they provide "share" buttons - and yet what permission does that imply?

The general rule on copyright is that (if nothing else is stated) you can share short sections for critical review where you are not doing so for commercial gain.  You should routinely give your source, including a link back to the original.  And if something is behind a paywall, you should take that as a pretty strong suggestion that the publisher does not want it copied.  If in doubt, a link to the original and a note of what's there ...

It's not just copyright for you to consider when posting. So many things from publishing other people's personal data without their permission to inciting violence and simply making a wally of yourself. The safety online laws lay out no less than 17 areas of concern, most of them obvious when you think about them, and our admin and moderator team have one eye open to stop things going belly up.

It's the responsibility of you - the original poster - to keep to the law in addition to our forum guidelines, but if we notice something (and we are required to look out) and leave it when it should not be there, we can be in trouble too. Please feel free to ask if you have any doubts about what you can post, and help us by reporting things that you suspect should not have been posted.

P.S. - the rules don't just apply to text - they also apply to photographs, videos, and sounds.  And (personal opinion) all this lot makes sense - why should material providers who have investing in producing it sit back and see others sharing it - freeloading off their work?

.. and a late addition:
16:50 London Paddington to Moreton-In-Marsh due 18:22 has been cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

The gap in the service now has nothing westward from Oxford from 16:47 until the last train at 21:46 (and a similar gap at Moreton).

They should contact the local heritage railways around them. They might have spare parts they need right away.

In olden days, a work around may have been found by using a pilotman. Of course, we don't know what the problem is, and these days it would need to be a pilotperson.

The last time there was a problem with the token machine a few years ago a Network Rail Pilotman / woman was used.  the problem is not the Token system when I used the train Friday the Driver did the token exchange so its either the Train Staff and / or points at Bourne End for Marlow branch

From the BBC:

The pilot of a hot air balloon has been praised for landing safely in a small residential street filled with cars, telegraph poles, wire and houses.

Emma Firman, who filmed the descent in Bower Street in Bedford on Saturday said he did an "excellent job" and she made sure she congratulated him on his efforts, as no damage was caused.  She said she could tell it "wasn't his first rodeo".

The British Balloon & Airship Club confirmed it "landed without incident" and that everyone on board was OK.

Sian King, who lives in the Castle Road area where it happened, also filmed the landing while she was walking the dog. She said when she first spotted it, close to Russell Park, she was shocked and surprised at how low it was.

"I saw loads of people gathering towards Bower Street; it was almost on top of the roofs," she said. Her partner, Sam Coldham, along with other helpers, grabbed the guide rope to help it down. "I thought it was going to land in my friend's garden", she said. "It could have been a lot worse; it was just crazy to see it in such a built-up area; it narrowly missed the cables and the chimney stacks."

Mr Coldham said he helped pull the basket to safety. He believed it ran out of wind on its way to its planned landing site in Russell Park. "No injuries, no damage, no nothing, just a great pilot," he added.

An update, from the BBC:

Street artist to transform new railway station

A street artist says he is "very happy" to have been commissioned to create a mural at a railway station.

Ashley Down station in Bristol, which closed 60 years ago, was re-opened in September 2024 after a £23m revamp.

Local artist Andy Council was chosen after Severnside Community Rail Partnership asked artists to submit applications to transform the station to celebrate its first anniversary. "Gaining local knowledge of an area is key to my work and I'm looking forward to working with community members to make this piece extra special," said Mr Council. "I plan on painting creatures that are made up of local landmarks which will represent the areas people, history, sporting heritage and wildlife," he added.

The artist has spoken to Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers FC and local councillors to get ideas and inspiration for the mural. "I'm very happy to have been chosen to paint this prominent wall which will greet passengers at the new station," he said. "It's exciting to have a station at this location once again which will offer Bristolians more options to get around the city and beyond."

The unveiling in late September will also coincide with the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.

Helen Godwin, the mayor of the West of England, said there had been a "fantastic response" to the artist call out and the panel struggled to pick just one.  "I can't wait to see the mural that Andy creates," she said. "This artwork will be a celebration of the station itself and the rich heritage of the local area, the city, and our whole region," said Ms Godwin.

Faye Keane, community development officer at Severnside Community Rail Partnership, said she hoped Mr Council would "offer a playful and impressive mural representing the history and community of Ashley Down".

Ashley Down is the newest station to open in the west of England and was the second to open in Bristol in just under a century, following Portway Park & Ride station in 2023.

Re: First Bus android app: room for improvement?

Revisiting this thread, as I was wondering if anyone had found the venerable 'Bustime' Android app.

First time using it, I thought... where are my sunglasses?

Second time I thought... this is well bonkers.

The third time, once the splash screen had vanished, and it being a Sunday, selecting Bath's 6a bus and finding the app is looking at the wrong 6a from another part of the country, this was discouraging and I stopped using it for a bit.

The fourth time, noticing that when it *does* list the right service, it exposes various information that other bus apps do not, and also that its responsiveness is good, I've been making more frequent use of it. The 'Status' page is probably not useful for most, but it's very reassuring that it checks everything in sight and list's what's working and what isn't.

It's far more rewarding than standing at a bus stop with certain other apps showing... not very much before telling me 'Sorry, technical issue' when they mean that the city's somewhat woeful mobile connectivity has caused something in the app to time out.

Update: That errant 6a service, I've just found that it belongs to Reading, Berkshire. There must be something bad in some database that feeds the app perhaps. How to discover which database is anyone's guess, but some errant database field must be placing the 6a bus in Reading rather than Bath...
